Sometimes, all it takes is one conversation, one shared need and a room full of people willing to listen.

During the networking session at Badisa’s AGM, guest speaker Ilana Steyn encouraged attendees to connect with one another, speak openly about the needs within their programmes and consider how they could support each other.

The team from Alta du Toit Centre took her words to heart.

With some encouragement from his colleagues, Centre Manager Johan Jacobs stood up and shared a need that was close to the team’s heart. Alta du Toit Centre had recently received an incredible donation from Mediclinic George Hospital: 28 working hospital beds, but the beds did not include mattresses.

Johan did not ask the room to solve the problem. He simply asked whether anyone could assist, even if that meant putting Alta in contact with someone who might be able to supply suitable mattresses at a discounted rate.

What happened next was a wonderful example of what can happen when people are willing to share, connect and respond.

Two people immediately stood up and offered their support. One offered 20 mattresses, while another offered 50 mattresses.

The response meant far more than meeting Alta’s original need. The 28 donated hospital beds can now be properly equipped, while the additional mattresses will allow Alta to support other hostels where new mattresses are also needed.

It was a simple moment during a networking session, but one that captured something much bigger: when we know one another’s needs, we create opportunities to help, connect resources and strengthen the wider Badisa family.

Sometimes possibilities really do begin with simply speaking up.
