Vredendal Old Age Home, a programme of Badisa, invites applications from an enthusiastic, responsible and motivated Head Nurse to join our team.
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring high-quality nursing and care services to older persons and persons with disabilities, as well as providing effective leadership and supervision of nursing and care staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure that appropriate norms, standards and best practices for the care of older persons are maintained.
- Coordinate and supervise the daily nursing care of residents.
- Identify residents’ nursing and care needs.
- Develop, implement, evaluate and regularly review individual care plans.
- Supervise, support and provide training to caregivers and nursing staff.
- Administer, control, store and maintain accurate records of scheduled and other medication in accordance with applicable legislation and procedures.
- Monitor infection prevention and control, wound care, observations and general health care.
- Monitor residents’ physical, psychological and emotional well-being.
- Manage and report medical emergencies and referrals.
- Medication management.
- Manage staff, including duty rosters, supervision, support and performance management.
- Implement and monitor policies, procedures, protocols and quality management systems.
- Ensure compliance with statutory, professional and ethical requirements.
- Maintain accurate administration, records, statistics and reports.
- Communicate and liaise effectively with residents, families, staff, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders.
- Participate in management and assist with the development and implementation of procedures, manuals and information documents.
- Ensure responsible use and management of equipment and other assets.
- Be available for after-hours duties, weekends and public holidays when required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Diploma or Degree in Nursing.
- Registered as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- Minimum 2 years’ relevant professional nursing experience, preferably in the care of older persons.
- Valid personal professional indemnity insurance.
- Good knowledge of the physical and medical care of older persons and persons with disabilities.
- Knowledge of the Nursing Act, Older Persons Act and applicable healthcare and safety requirements.
- Knowledge and experience in the administration, management and control of scheduled medication.
- Knowledge of medication management, including CDU and blister packaging, will be advantageous.
- Good knowledge of infection prevention and control and quality management.
- Strong leadership, organisational and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as within a team.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in Afrikaans and English.
- Good computer skills, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Good administrative and report-writing skills.
- A valid driver’s licence will be advantageous.
- Willingness to work according to a duty roster, including day and night shifts, weekends and public holidays.
