There is something quietly immersive about Kim Black’s artwork for May’s Colour Your World campaign.
Bathed in tones of yellow, her piece does more than represent hope. It feels like it. The painting draws you into a familiar lounge space, filled with warmth, connection, and the quiet presence of shared stories. It is a place of comfort, belonging, and emotional safety.
For Kim, this sense of safety has always been part of her creative journey. “I have always felt a sense of freedom and infinite possibility when I’m creating,” she shares. “It was a safe place for me as a child and has become a beautiful way to express my creativity and bless others as an adult.”
The theme of yellow and hope came naturally. “Yellow is such a cheery colour, and hope, no matter how small, is that ray of sunshine needed to believe everything will be okay.”
Inspired by her own home, the artwork reflects her lounge. It is a space where connection comes to life. “It’s where I feel loved, relaxed, and recharged. A welcoming space for conversations with family and friends.”
For Kim, hope is found in these everyday moments. “Through conversations, we can inspire and lift others up, give new perspectives, and most importantly, listen.”
Her use of yellow is intentional and immersive. “I colour drenched the painting in yellow for a glowing feeling. A feeling of hope.”
This extends into her deeper intention. “I want people to feel a sense of belonging, that they can be their most authentic selves.”
With over 30 years as a professional artist, and having lived and worked across Botswana, the UK, and Cape Town, Kim brings a rich sense of connection to her work. A recent residency in France reminded her to keep learning, be brave, and never let fear stand in the way of opportunity.
Reflecting on her collaboration with Badisa, she shares, “I love that it’s about connecting people through real stories and giving a sense of optimism for the future.”
Ultimately, her hope for those who experience the piece is simple. “That they feel a sense of belonging and leave inspired. There is no better reward.
