By Chantelle Gertse, Badisa Social Worker (Hermanus, Stanford, Gansbaai)

At the beginning of 2024, Heidi and Kurt* were successfully reunited with their biological mother and family of origin. This milestone marked the end of a long journey of dedication and the tireless efforts of all the role players involved, including the committed social work team at Badisa.
A path of recovery
From the day the children were removed from their mother’s care, she and her family committed themselves to a path of self-improvement and healing. With great care and dedication, Badisa supported the full rehabilitation process and preparation for reunification.
The mother not only addressed her substance dependency, but also truly demonstrated that she had chosen a new way of life, one that placed her children’s best interests above all else. She completely changed her lifestyle, rebuilt the emotional bond with her children, and processed her loss in a healthy way. Today, she offers them the stability, love, and care they need.
Learning from the past
Over time, their mother gained insight into how a deeply painful period – the loss of her life partner and the children’s father – had temporarily led her off course. With the support of social workers, loved ones, and other role players, she was able to make things right again.
The desire to reunite
The children saw the turnaround in their mother’s life and developed a deep desire to be with her again. The Badisa team provided essential aftercare services and is grateful that the children readjusted well in their family of origin.
A promising new chapter
For Heidi and Kurt, this new phase is full of promise. Their emotional connection with their mother and grandmother has grown into a strong, healthy relationship.
The successful reunification of these two siblings with their biological mother proves that with the right help and support, even the most difficult challenges can be overcome.
