This story was submitted by one of Badisa’s dedicated social workers who walked alongside Lia and her foster mother throughout their journey.

Lia* is a special child. From birth, it was clear that she faced unique medical and emotional challenges. Her early years were filled with serious health problems and repeated hospital stays. Her journey has not been easy, but through it all, one woman changed her life forever.

An ‘angel’ by her side

Even before Lia was formally placed in foster care, this remarkable woman, described by many as an angel, was already by her side. She offered support to Lia’s biological mother, transported them to medical appointments, and spent long hours next to Lia’s hospital bed. She never did this out of duty or obligation, but from a place of deep love and compassion for the family.

Becoming a foster mother

When Lia was officially placed in foster care, this same woman took over her care without hesitation. She supported Lia through difficult days and began to guide her emotional healing after traumatic experiences. Lia’s challenges were complex. She faced neurological issues, physical disabilities and emotional responses such as self-harming behaviour and aggression.

Despite these difficulties, the foster mother remained by her side, working hand-in-hand with social workers, doctors and therapists, to get the best possible outcome for Lia.

Today, Lia lives in a specialist facility where she receives full-time care and therapeutic support. But her bond with her foster mother has never faded. During school holidays and special occasions, Lia returns to this familiar and loving home. The foster mother stays in regular contact with the facility and with Lia, making sure her needs continue to be met and that she receives the best possible care.

A life changed through love

Lia’s life has not been free from pain or difficulty. But she has the rare gift of a constant, stable figure in her life. This extraordinary woman is a living example of how one person’s selfless love can restore dignity and give hope. She gave Lia more than care. She gave her a voice.
