By Chantelle Gertse, Badisa Social Worker (Hermanus, Stanford, Gansbaai)

Duwayne’s* life journey is a testimony of hope, perseverance, and the power of collaboration between stakeholders and community members with a heart for a child. He was just under three weeks old when he was placed in foster care. His biological mother, facing difficult circumstances, was unable to provide him with the care he needed.

A nurturing start

In foster care, Duwayne flourished. His foster mother created a loving and stable environment where he felt safe and could grow healthily. A strong emotional bond formed between them, and his early childhood was filled with care and attention.

Rebuilding family bonds

Later, a paternity test confirmed his biological father’s identity. From that moment, the father began to build a committed relationship with his son. The journey toward reunification was not easy. Physical distance added further complexity, but modern technology and strong cooperation helped sustain the process.

The Badisa team, working closely with the social workers in the area where the father lived, played a critical role. Through a structured plan, intensive services, guidance, and ongoing support, a loving and trusting bond was established between father and son.

Duwayne’s biological mother was also included in the process. From the beginning, there was a conscious effort to ensure that she maintained meaningful and quality contact with her child.

A happy homecoming

Two years ago, Duwayne was successfully reunited with his father. Since then, he has been raised in a stable, nurturing home where he is loved and supported. In early 2025, he started school, and he is flourishing socially, emotionally, and academically.

The Badisa team continues to monitor the situation and remains proud of the incredible progress this family has made.

Perseverance and partnership

Duwayne’s story reminds us that families can be rebuilt and restored through determination, love, and the ongoing cooperation of committed role players.

Providing this level of support required continuous effort from the social workers involved. They faced intense challenges, but with perseverance and collaboration, they were able to do what was necessary to give this young boy a voice and a chance to be raised by his own father, to strengthen his family bonds, and to thrive where he was “planted.”
