Sometimes, the smallest hands bring about the biggest changes. For day mother Liza Otto from Ravensmead, it was an opportunity to make a difference in her community, and a journey of growth and fulfilment for herself.
A path to a new beginning
When a former Badisa employee recommended that she become a home mother, Liza had no idea how much this step would change her life. “Being part of the Little Seeds day mother programme has been an incredible learning experience,” she shares. “The programme coordinators are extremely helpful and provide everything I need to run my daycare effectively.”
The workshops and courses organised by Little Seeds have not only helped her work with and educate young children but have also empowered her as an entrepreneur to manage her own business. “I am very proud of myself in that, even though it’s a small service, I can make a difference in children’s lives and serve my community.”
A safe space
In a world where children are often exposed to challenges such as poverty and substance abuse, Liza’s daycare has become a refuge for many. “The children who come to me get the chance to escape negative influences for a few hours a day and learn something positive,” she explains.
She proudly shares how children who have been with her since 2020 are now in school and still remember what they learned in her care. “It makes me incredibly proud when parents tell me, or even send me voice notes, about what their children say and the songs they sing at home. Even though it may look like we are just playing all day, my children are actually learning a lot—and that makes me so happy.”
“Many children are left to fend for themselves because they are too young for school”
Unemployment is one of the biggest challenges in Liza’s community, making it difficult for many parents to afford daycare. “Badisa helps me take in these children at a very low cost, or even for free, by providing stationery, food, and other essential resources.” This support has enabled her to help more children and their parents while delivering a valuable service to her community.
A calling from the heart
For Liza, being a day mother is not just a job, it is a passion. “It warms my heart to help my community. Looking after, caring for, and educating these little ones brings me the greatest joy. After all, they are our adults of tomorrow and our future.”
A message to other day mothers
For any woman who is uncertain about the opportunity to become a day mother, Liza says, “I highly recommend it. The Little Seeds day mother programme is incredibly educational, and the possibilities are endless. On one hand, you are helping your community and doing your part, and on the other, it opens many doors for you.”
She concludes with an insight that reflects her own journey, “It does so much for your self-esteem and personal growth. It is truly worth it.”
