The most significant milestone in the congregation’s history was the establishment of a daycare centre. Preparations had already begun under Rev. Malan Jacobs, and on 2 March 1968, the matter was thoroughly discussed. Rev. and Mrs. Coetzee from the “moedergemeente” advocated passionately for the cause and secured the congregation’s support. The church council of the “moedergemeente” had already guaranteed R5000. With unanimous faith, the church council decided to move forward with the project.

After securing a loan of R20,000, construction began in 1969. The following year, this beautiful and efficient building, designed to house around 80 children, was completed—a true milestone in the congregation’s journey.

On 28 November 1969, it was officially registered as Ceres Daycare Centre. This institution would care for children older than one month and younger than seven years. The cornerstone, a gift from the Christian Children’s Union, was laid by Rev. H.M. Beets on 25 April, marking a significant moment in the daycare centre’s history.

Important Milestones

One of the most significant milestones at HM Beets Daycare Centre is its consistent annual growth. The centre has expanded from 120 learners in 2023 to 149 learners in 2024. This growth is a testament to the strong support from its parents, especially evident in their enthusiastic participation in the centre’s Marathon Booklet project. This annual fundraising initiative involves each child receiving a booklet at the beginning of the year, which they fill and return by the fourth term. The top fundraiser is crowned at the end of the year, adding an element of fun and competition.

Current Enrollment and Parental Circumstances

Currently, the centre serves 149 children from Nduli, Bellavista, Hamlet, and Ceres. The majority of the parents are seasonal workers, leading to a significant drop in attendance when the season ends, as many parents struggle to afford daycare fees. To address this, the centre relies heavily on government subsidies and regular fundraising activities to sustain its operations.

Looking Ahead

In response to high demand, the centre plans to open an additional baby class in the near future. Many parents prefer to leave their babies in the centre’s care due to its convenient location and excellent services. This expansion will help more parents find reliable childcare, enabling them to work with peace of mind.
