Written by Liz Steenkamp, Badisa Trio Chairperson
I was approached by the late Rev. Stef Esterhuize, then chairman of Magdalena Huis’s governing board, to become involved in what is now known as Badisa Trio. Initially, Badisa Scottsville was part of the Trio after merging with the Kraaifontein office. The early years were challenging. I recently read an old minute noting how Kraaifontein and Bellville had to draw on Scottsville’s reserves because they faced greater difficulties compared to other programs.
Looking back, it seems almost impossible, considering how much Badisa Trio has grown. Today, it stands as one of Badisa’s strongest social service programs. Despite numerous challenges, we learned that prayer and good cooperation can transform situations. There was intense competition for donations from churches and companies, but the Social Services Managers, together with the governing board, worked tirelessly for a better future. Although recruiting volunteers for the governing board was sometimes tough, we remained a dedicated team with the Trio’s best interests at heart.
We were the first governing board to implement a well-being plan for our social workers, led by Renee Pretorius and Juanita Beukes. Additionally, we were likely the first to raise funds through a staff member climbing Kilimanjaro! This initiative marked the beginning of our annual fundraising and marketing/awareness ball, with the first event held in 2015 at Kenridge’s church hall. I fondly remember Saturday morning clothing sales with Bellville’s team at Uniting Reformed Church Morningstar’s church hall. Effective cooperation and a strong relationship between volunteers, social workers, and managers are crucial for the success of such a service. These memories always bring a smile to my face.
Badisa Trio later established various committees within the governing board to better manage affairs, which was one of the best decisions we ever made. We now have a successful strategic/fundraising/marketing committee. The threat of closing our offices, especially Kraaifontein, due to financial problems is a distant memory. We thank the Lord for this, and we honour past board members who helped build Badisa Trio and are no longer with us.
Our current governing board is one of the best: dedicated, genuine in their care for others, and selflessly giving their time and effort. As we celebrate Badisa’s 21st anniversary, we sing a song of thanks and bring glory to the Lord for His great grace. May the years ahead be full of blessings in every area of service delivery. I am proud to be part of the Badisa family.”
