The purpose of foster care is to provide temporary protection and nurturing for children in need, offering them a safe and healthy environment with positive support and role models until they can be reunited with their family of origin. Children in foster care may live with relatives or with non-related foster parents.
As a designated child protection organisation, Badisa is responsible for recruiting, screening, and approving foster parents and placing children in foster care according to the Children’s Act. In 2023/24, Badisa provided foster care supervision services to 4,227 children and placed 374 new children in foster care following children’s court proceedings.
Badisa collaborates with Kin Culture to strengthen foster care services, ensuring that every child receives the care and support they need.
Kin Culture
Like Badisa, Kin Culture believes that family is the answer to the nation’s orphaned and vulnerable children. Their mission is to build and support a community of loving and generous families to provide homes for vulnerable children. Kin Culture assists with the recruitment, training and on-going support of foster parents.
Home From Home
Home from Home was founded by two visionary women, Jayne Payne and Pippa Shaper in 2005. It became one of the first non profit organisations to be registered to implement the cluster foster care model. For almost two decades, Home from Home has successfully provided supported and supervised community-based foster care. It is believed that living in a home with no more than six children and a dedicated foster mother or family is the next best place for children whose biological parents cannot provide for them.
World Foster Day
World Foster Day, observed annually, is a global celebration dedicated to recognising and honouring the invaluable contributions of foster families and child protection organisations. This day serves to raise awareness about the importance of foster care in providing safe, nurturing environments for children in need. It highlights the crucial role of foster parents who offer stability, love, and guidance to vulnerable children, often during their most challenging times.
World Foster Day also aims to encourage more individuals and families to consider fostering, thereby helping to meet the growing demand for supportive homes. It is a day to celebrate the resilience and potential of foster children and to acknowledge the collective efforts of communities and organisations like Badisa that work tirelessly to support them.
