In 2024, the organisation adopted a new supervision policy designed to enhance the development and effectiveness of social service practitioners. Key elements of this policy include:
- Formal and In-Service Training: Supervisors will receive both formal education and in-service training in supervision, equipping them to guide social service practitioners effectively throughout their development process.
- Access to Mentoring: All supervisors will have access to experienced mentors who can provide support and guidance in managing the diverse challenges of supervision.
- Comprehensive Supervision Services: Social service practitioners will have regular access to supervision services and will only function independently after a formal assessment indicates their readiness.
- Structured Supervision Sessions: Supervision will include individual and group sessions, in-service training, and other internal and external training opportunities aligned with the supervisee’s developmental plan.
- Competency-Based Framework: Individual supervision will be conducted within a theoretical framework guided by a prescribed competency model. The supervisor and supervisee will agree on the competency levels, and the supervisee will provide a portfolio of evidence demonstrating growth in knowledge, skills, and professional experience.
There are four levels of progress/growth, and all indicators must be met before a social service practitioner can operate independently:
- Novice/Entry Level: 0-18 months of uninterrupted experience in child protection services.
- Intermediate/Capable Level: 18 months to 3 years of uninterrupted experience in child protection services.
- Advanced/Accomplished Level: 3-5 years of uninterrupted experience in child protection services.
- Expert/Authoritative Level: 5 years or more, at which point the social worker can work independently.
Badisa’s supervision policy strikes a balance between theory and practice, helping leaders to discover their authentic leadership and supervision styles. The program is grounded in the principles of adult learning and development, ensuring a robust and supportive environment for professional growth.
