In South Africa, more than 70% of people pass away without a will. When this happens, the government decides how your belongings are shared. This can cause delays, fights between family members, and unnecessary legal costs. But if you have a valid will, you can make sure your loved ones are looked after — and you can even continue helping others after you’re gone.
One way to do this is by leaving a bequest.
A bequest is a gift you choose to leave in your will. It can be money, a house, land, or anything valuable — given to a person, charity, or organisation. It’s your way of making sure the things you’ve worked hard for continue to make a difference.
For more than 22 years, Badisa has been a neighbour to people in need across the Western, Northern and Southern Cape. By leaving a bequest to Badisa, you become part of this story of care, love and giving back.
Why leave a bequest to Badisa
Badisa touches the lives of more than 1 million people every year through 134 community programmes. These services include:
- Helping children and families stay together and safe
- Supporting elderly people and persons with disabilities
- Running early childhood development centres
- Assisting those struggling with alcohol or drug use
Providing care in homes and communities
Says Basie van Wyk, Badisa’s CEO, “This milestone is a testament to the dedication of our 3,700 permanent employees and 2,645 volunteers who serve in communities across our network. Their commitment to our mission of being a neighbour to everyone in need is what makes this impact possible.”
Because Badisa is a registered Public Benefit Organisation (PBO), you can trust that your bequest will be handled with honesty and care. Your gift will continue helping others long after your lifetime — a true legacy of love.
How to leave a bequest to Badisa
Leaving a bequest is easier than you may think. Here’s how:
- Mention Badisa in your will
Include Badisa’s full name and Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) number to avoid confusion. - Decide what you want to give
It could be a fixed amount of money, a percentage of your estate, a house, or anything valuable. You can also leave whatever is left after your debts and other gifts are sorted. - Speak to a legal advisor
Your attorney or financial advisor will help you make sure everything is written correctly in your will. Also tell your executor (the person handling your will) about your wishes. - Keep your will up to date
If you get married, divorced, have children, or your finances change — update your will to make sure your bequest still matches your wishes.
A lasting legacy
When you leave a bequest to Badisa, your kindness lives on. It’s not just money — it’s a gift of love and hope for generations to come.
