Each year on 12 May, we celebrate International Nurse’s Day in honour of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing. But more than a tribute to one remarkable woman, this day honours the enduring legacy of all nurses, those who continue to be the light in the darkest moments of illness, loneliness, and uncertainty.
We know the vital role nurses play in upholding the dignity and well-being of every person in their care. The Lamp Pledge, inspired by Florence Nightingale’s legacy, serves as a daily reminder of every nurse’s commitment to compassionate, ethical, and selfless service to humanity. It’s also a reminder that a nurse is not only a caregiver but also an advocate, a comforter, a protector, and a voice for the vulnerable.
We honour all the nurses in the Badisa network and across South Africa who carry this light.
May the “oil of knowledge and love” keep your lamps burning brightly.
Thank you for being the strength behind every recovery and the quiet hero in every room.
