Renowned Afrikaans singer-songwriter Jak de Priester partnered with Badisa, one of Africa’s largest social development organisations, to release “Jy is Special”, a song dedicated to uplifting vulnerable children and communities. The song celebrates belonging, value and care and was written for Badisa’s Kuumba Care programme, which aims to mobilise individuals, businesses, and communities to actively care for South Africa’s most vulnerable citizens.

Story behind the song

“Jy is Special” was written to convey the important message that every child deserves to feel valued, cared for and protected. The lyrics compare children to the mountains, sun, and flowers, reinforcing that each person is unique and has a place in the world.

Speaking about his involvement in the project Jak de Priester said, “We must remember, children are the future of this country, and the safer and more special they feel, the better they can step into this world and become the leaders of this nation.”

The song is an anthem of encouragement and a call to action, aligning with Badisa’s Kuumba Care initiative, which unites all the organisation’s care programmes under one banner.

About Kuumba Care

Kuumba Care is a nationwide initiative launched by Badisa to inspire South Africans to engage actively in community care and upliftment.  “The name ‘Kuumba’ originates from the concept of people coming together and using their creativity to improve their communities,” says Annemarie Bezuidenhout, Marketing and Fundraising Director at Badisa.

The Kuumba character serves as an ambassador for care and change, and works to bring about change in vulnerable communities. Kuumba’s mission is to partner with people and organisations to provide structured services that empower families, promote independence, and create safe, nurturing environments for individuals from birth to old age.

“Kuumba Care is more than just a programme. It is a movement that challenges us to transform care from a passive concept into active engagement. As the tagline says, together, we care. Kuumba calls South Africa together to care for the most vulnerable,” says Bezuidenhout.

The song’s official music video, featuring Jak de Priester together with Kuumba, dancers from Carlyn Slaters, Uitsig Primary School children, and seniors from Parow Senior Centre captures the spirit of Kuumba Care.
