On 6 December 2024, Badisa Koue Bokkeveld will celebrate its 18th anniversary, coinciding with Badisa’s 21st anniversary—a double “coming of age” that makes this year particularly special.
Since its founding in 2006, the organisation has grown and thrived, thanks to the support of churches, farmers’ associations, businesses, and the Koue Bokkeveld community. This collaborative effort has been crucial to the organisation’s development and sustainability.
Badisa Koue Bokkeveld was established by Rev. Ferris (Uniting Reformed Church) and Rev. Muller (Dutch Reformed Church). The late Elmaryn de Bod served as the Manager of the Social Service Program, and social worker Leandrea Isaacs was appointed for a trial period from 10 April 2007 to 30 September 2007. The organisation’s first vehicle, a Toyota bakkie, was received on 18 May 2007, and the administrative officer began working on 1 June 2007.
On August 21, 2007, Mrs. Annie Hattingh joined as the new Manager, marking a new chapter for the office. The local business Kaap Agri made the first donation to the office, providing a heater.
The first annual meeting was held on 19 September 2007, with Rev. Rust as the guest speaker. Initially, the organisation also served the Agter Witzenberg community, but this area was handed over to DSD on 13 February 2009.
In May 2009, Ms. Julene Burger was appointed as the community developer. Badisa Steps Custody School, On the Mountain Aftercare Centre, and On the Mountain Service Centre were established to cater to toddlers, school-age children, and older persons, respectively. What began with just one table and chair has grown into four fully equipped offices for two social workers, one social support worker, and an administrative officer.
The strong cooperation between the farms and Badisa Koue Bokkeveld serves as a positive motivation for the staff, enabling them to work effectively on the farms despite various challenges. The new Trappies Daycare Centre, which opened its doors in 2020, now serves 32 children from the Op-Die-Berg community.
Badisa’s care programs include parental guidance programs for biological parents, child protection programs, group work with teenage mothers, support groups for foster children and foster parents, family days, camps for teenage foster children, and life skills programs for children with behavioural problems.
The governing board of Badisa Koue Bokkeveld is a source of pride for the organisation. Their genuine interest in the well-being of the staff, as well as their active involvement, make a significant difference. Whether it’s lending a listening ear when social work staff feel discouraged, organising a pleasant breakfast for Social Worker’s Day, or providing well-being training sessions led by board member Rev. Steenkamp, their efforts contribute to the positive attitude and drive of the staff.
Rev. Alex Clark, Chairman of Badisa Koue Bokkeveld, writes:
The highlight of Badisa Koue Bokkeveld is the people.
First and foremost, it’s the dedicated team working in the office and programs, each member going above and beyond in their service to the community. Our team includes two social workers, one support worker, a cook, an administrative officer, and two teachers at the daycare centre. Anyone in the social sector knows that the work isn’t easy or pleasant every day, but this group is committed to making a real difference in a broken world.
The second highlight is the incredible volunteers on the governing board. These individuals are deeply committed to supporting the Badisa staff, bringing their unique expertise and skills to the table to help as much as possible. They take their support role very seriously, ensuring that the staff has the backing they need to succeed.
Finally, the people we serve—our community—are exceptional. The Bokkeveld is home to remarkable individuals who build their lives in this beautiful yet harsh environment. It is a privilege for us at Badisa Koue Bokkeveld to be welcomed into your lives and to provide professional social and prevention services.
We are grateful to work as part of the Badisa family, striving to heal what is broken in this world.
