Badisa Tygerberg – Transferring skills to parents and children
The year 2022 marked a new chapter for Badisa Tygerberg with the introduction of Kuumba and the Kuumba Care Programme. Kuumba literally means ‘to use our creativity, to do as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than before’. With this in mind, Badisa Tygerberg delivers comprehensive and diverse child protection services to the communities it serves to help ensure the safety and development of children so that they can become responsible adults who can make a positive contribution to society.
The establishment of the Kuumba Care Programme brought various new challenges and exciting adventures. During 2022, programmes such as the following were rolled out in the communities: the Stop Bullying Programme at schools, the Bright Star Leadership Programme aimed at children and adults, and the Parenting Skills Courses for parents.
The Parenting Programme, aimed at helping parents to improve their parenting knowledge, attitudes and skills, seems to be a great success as more and more parents ask to attend the programme. This programme is delivered via 12 information sessions that address various topics over eight weeks. The programme was an invaluable experience as it enriched the lives of the parents who attended it while it also made a direct impact on the lives of their children.
Over and above the Kuumba Care Programme, Badisa Tygerberg was able to bring awareness to the community with its Child Protection Week campaign and the 16 Days of Activism campaign.
Badisa will take the Kuumba Care Programme to all our social service programmes in 2024.
